WIRELESSG says it is in talks with local airlines on a solution that could soon allow sub-Saharan travellers to connect to the internet on domestic and long haul flights.

While the technology that will enable in-flight internet services needs Civil Aviation Authority approval, it will be provided through an exclusive agreement with US-based Row 44, who WirelessG says is already successfully offering in-flight Wi-Fi Internet to Southwest Airlines and Alaska Airlines.

The first complete set of hardware will arrive in South Africa shortly and this will be used to set up a ground-based proof of concept in South Africa.
