After about seven years of making very little difference to the South African telecoms consumer, the country’s so-called second national operator is set to disappear into the folds of Vodacom, where it will cease to exist as a standalone entity.

Rumours have long been circulating that certain controversial pieces of legislation might be held back until after next year’s elections – lest the ruling party appears not to act in the interest of the people.

The birth of South Africa’s third 24-hour news channel – Africa News Network 7 (ANN7) – was never going to be easy, especially considering that most South Africans love to hate its major backers – the controversial Gupta family.

As South Africa tries to follow the rest of the modern world into the hi-tech age, it is becoming abundantly obvious that we are not ready for certain transitions and should perhaps consider abandoning some of the ambitious plans that have little hope of succeeding.

So parliament’s ethics committee has finally ruled, finding that former communications minister Dina Pule is guilty of abusing her power and recommending that the maximum penalties allowed by the Joint Rules of Parliament be handed down.
