Furious local collaboration on OS security solution MEMBERS of the Whitehat Information Security Group (WISG) have been hard at work on an open source server-based anti-virus, anti-spam, intrusion detection, Web content filter and firewall solution for SMEs and individuals, dubbed Mamba.

The project, the first locally produced product of this nature, is a coordinated effort of three different volunteer teams, participating from three different provinces.

According to Craig Rosewarne, Whitehat founder and chairman of the WISG, the team aims to have an alpha version ready by mid February, and already have well-known corporates eager to test the solution at enterprise level.

Once testing has been completed, Rosewarne says the solution will be available for free download or will be distributed via CD to interested companies.

Phase Two of the project will involve the development of a central management Mamba console, as well as push updates. A physical security solution via IP cameras is on the cards as well.

The team hopes to showcase the solution at ITWeb`s Security Summit in March, and urges all coders, novices and experts who would like to form part of the project to get in touch with the WISG (www.whitehat.org.za).
