Two green schools in Gauteng have officially been opened. Northriding Secondary School, in Randburg, and Noordwyk Secondary School, in Midrand, have been fitted with solar panels, which let them generate their own electricity. Rain harvesting systems have also been installed, which purify rain water within the school premises, so it can be re-used for various purposes.

At the opening of Northriding Secondary School, Gauteng premier Nomvula Mokonyane said the building of the schools was an indication of government’s commitment to education and a green future.

“There is no reason learners in a school like this one cannot be productive. Government is doing everything in its power to create conducive conditions for learning and teaching,” she said.

The premier said there are plans to install solar systems in all Gauteng schools. “The new schools that we are building now have solar systems.”

She asked communities to play a role in safeguarding school infrastructure. “We are appealing to our communities not to vandalise the schools. These schools belong to you.”

Noordwyk Secondary School has an administration block, 24 classrooms, two science labs, multipurpose classrooms, two computer rooms, a library and sports facilities.

According to government, the construction of the public schools began in November 2012; Northriding school cost R55 million and Noordwyk R52 million.
