The National Association of School Governing Bodies (NASGB) caused controversy with a call to outlaw cellphones in SA’s schools. In May, NASGB general secretary, Matakanye Matakanye, was outspoken on the issue of cellphones in schools, adamant that the devices were detracting from productive classroom activity. Matakanye says the body has commissioned its various structures to compile reports on how schools are experiencing the use of cellphones by their pupils. – ITWeb

The Muvo card has been officially rolled out to all commuters using People Mover and Durban Transport buses, in the eThekwini Transit System. The card, developed by Standard Bank’s Beyond Payments unit, uses contactless technology to provide tap-and-pay functionality. The ticket machines and reading devices aboard the buses and at self-service kiosks have been provided by transport IT specialist Almex. – ITWeb

BOS Ice Tea has partnered with Cow Africa, a digital marketing, brand activation and PR company, to introduce a Twitteractivated vending machine. According to Cow Africa, the machine is a world first. The machine dispenses a free can of BOS Ice Tea when tweets are posted with a unique hashtag. To activate the machine, users must tag @Bos and include the hashtag ‘#BosTweet4T’. – ITWeb

The Vodafone Innovation Centre, in Midrand, has won the Mail & Guardian’s Greening the Future award in the “Innovations in renewables” category. The building, situated at Vodacom’s head office, in Midrand, has a Six-Star Green Star rating, making it one of the greenest in Africa. The centre is carbon-neutral and designed for water, energy and emissions savings. – ITWeb

The Samsung Galaxy SIII was officially unveiled in SA recently, at an event in Sandton. The SIII is the highly-anticipated successor to the Galaxy SII. While the device has already been available from select Vodacom and MTN stores, Samsung says the handset will now be available nationally.
