THE DEPARTMENT of Trade and Industry is set to discuss laws relating to how online gambling may be advertised.

Sabinet`s Parliamentary Information Service reports that a meeting of the National Council of Provinces last week discussed mandates from the various provinces on the National Gambling Amendment Bill.

Among other regulations, the bill proposes that only licence interactive gambling providers may advertise, with the minister having control over the manner and form of advertising. Sabinet`s statement says a major debate has ensued over the nature of the advertising to be allowed, and whether it should be allowed at all. The DTI has now agreed to return to a meeting of the same provincial committee with "a formulation that is recommended on the subject by both DTI and the state law advisers on the subject".
