Turning an IT cost-centre into a competitive business has seemed attractive to many companies. Unlike many, however, T-Systems not only seems to be working, it is bringing business to South Africa.
WorldCom`s woes have had very little impact on wholly owned subsidiary UUNet, and the local operation is looking at 30 to 40 percent growth in Internet operations – to which African operations will contribute a great deal.
Nortel proves it doesn`t take an army to keep the business running in South Africa.
Since it opened its doors in 1994, Sun Microsystems SA has grown from a small local marketing and support office with annual sales of $1 million into a continent-wide business worth hundred of millions of rand a year.
