As I write this, I`m as curious as anyone about this year`s IT Personality and ICT Leadership winners. As I write this, I`m as curious as anyone about this year`s IT Personality and ICT Leadership winners.

Last year`s personality, (Torque-IT), sat at Brainstorm`s table during the run-up to his crowning, and sure enough, personality was not in short supply. He turned the table into the life of the party, with the noise and laughter ensuing from his tales of lawyerly and Charter escapades.

Sitting back with a glass of good wine, I thought (Novell SA) would surely be among the favourites to walk away with the honours, but then I wasn`t reckoning with how briefly he`d been back in SA, after helping shape Novell`s re-entry into the software game, with the help of Suse Linux. He has, however, since made waves like few others, with his larger-than-life evangelism of open source, and I hope the birth pains of this alternative platform are soon over, to aid him in a just cause - choice.

For a change, this week`s issue is not just about telecoms. There is the odd announcement about broadband (the Wireless Broadband Report), but the buzz is about something entirely different. Our cover story reports on the state of software development in the country, and notes that we`re about to miss the boat if we don`t get down to business. I don`t know how many times this point has to be made. It`s disheartening to see such complacency in government and industry circles, but to be fair, there`s more to the problem than meets the eye - including telecoms.

Issue 26 is our biggest yet. We`re approaching year-end, so perhaps the feat won`t be repeated again this cycle, but hopefully it is a taste of things to come.

Enjoy the read,
