The long arm of the law Laws, regulations, codes of conduct, proceedings, findings and pronouncements - regulation is a main theme of this issue.

If it`s not the vast and growing body of laws and regulations demanding compliance that gets our attention (see our cover story on page 16), it`s the growing realisation of the important role that Icasa plays in the telecoms sector (see page 11).

And if it`s not that, then you can be sure the ICT Charter will crop up sooner or later in our coverage again.

To give shape to our coverage of an increasingly important field, this week we introduce a regular rundown of the week`s legal happenings. This issue features a selection from a compilation by Inc., a well-known ICT-focused attorney firm. Lisa`s work will in all likelihood be used extensively in future as well, but we`re leaving the door open to other contributors to explain how the law affects end-user enterprises or the industry.

In short, we foresee that the regulatory environment will be of increasing importance to readers in years to come. It`s simply a case of society having caught up with technology and imposing its rules on the way industry conducts its business, and businesses use technology. It had to happen sooner or later.

As for the rest of iWeek, we break some interesting stories, most significantly perhaps the revelation from Nando`s that it is considering going back to Windows for its store operations and back-office functions, after a fling with Red Hat Linux.

This is sure to be an emotional issue for many people, but if we are to conclude one thing from it, it`s that there are many aspects to total cost of ownership, other than the software, that buyers have to consider and make provision for.

Enjoy this issue,
