Next the Sunday Times announced that ICASA chair Mandla Langa had dropped out of the race for the top position at the national broadcaster. The report went on to say that others in the running for the SABC post included presidential communications head Murphy Morobe and Sentech chief executive Dr Sebiletso Mokone-Matabane.

Although the paper could not confirm Altron corporate affairs executive Dali Mpofu`s involvement, it did say that between Cabinet, the broadcaster, and the President, a final decision should be made by the end of June.

Speaking to people within the sector about whom they thought would be the best candidate for the position, many agreed that Langa would have been just what the SABC needed. Others insisted that Mokone-Matabane, the only female candidate, is a shoo-in for the position. "Looking at the current drive to see more women in executive positions, coupled with her experience and vast knowledge of the broadcasting industry, she is the obvious candidate," said one.

He did, however, add that the only thing that might cause a speed bump on her way to the top would be her reported involvement in a misuse of funds scandal in 1997 at the Independent Broadcasting Association (IBA), as it was known before it became ICASA.

But who knows, perhaps with a feminine touch, the SABC could finally become what it was meant to be.
