Companies may go to great lengths to secure their networks, but once they allow unmanaged mobile access to these networks, existing security is rendered pointless, said Bennie Labuschagne, director of Cyber Forensics at Cyanre.

“Besides the growing threat of spyware on mobile devices, the fact is that staff themselves can use their mobile devices to access and move any information they like from behind the company firewalls and into the cloud,” Labuschagne said.

More effective policies need to be put in place to specify how employees can use and access data, how the enterprise can track and secure its movement, and the privacy that users of mobile devices are entitled to when they access enterprise IP using their mobile devices, he noted.
