It really irks me when yet another tech company spews out yet another press release about how its latest effort to connect rural schools – hand out tablet devices or donate laptops to teachers or pupils at some school or other – will help to shape our next generation of geniuses.

While a Chinese company has been lined up to bail out ailing pay-TV provider TopTV, it is now more unlikely than ever that the broadcaster will have any significant impact on the local broadcasting space.

As cyber attacks become more sophisticated and destructive, some global organisations are beginning to tackle this form of warfare head-on, realising it is a bigger and more serious threat than perhaps previously expected.

The recent appointments of Telkom’s new CEO and COO – Sipho Maseko and Dr Brian Armstrong, respectively – have largely been welcomed by the market, but analysts have placed the ball squarely in government’s court, saying the state now needs to plot a course of the ailing company.

As South Africans, we are by now used to seeing the country’s public infrastructure degenerate as a result of underinvestment and leadership by government.
