A project to build a central DNA profile database for rhinos across Africa has seen 380 arrests and 25 prison sentences. The project is being run at the University of Pretoria’s Faculty of Veterinary Science’s Onderstepoort facility. Dr Cindy Harper, who is in charge of establishing the database, known as RhODIS (rhino DNA index system), says it is being used to provide forensic evidence in poaching court cases. – ITWeb
Public Enterprises Minister Malusi Gigaba is proposing a legislative review to ensure harsher punishment for those found guilty of cable theft, as a measure to deal with the crime.

The SA National Roads Agency (Sanral) has, for the second time, cancelled the hearings against the controversial e-tolling system at the National Consumer Commission (NCC). The complaint was brought against the system by the Democratic Alliance (DA). DA Gauteng transport spokesperson Neil Campbell says both cancellations were at very short notice. – ITWeb
South Africa’s Internet economy is expected to leap from being worth R51 billion in 2010 to R103 billion in 2016, according to a new report from the Boston Consulting Group.

Local ISP OpenWeb unveiled an “affordable broadband deal”, Budget Unshaped ADSL, at R19 per Gigabyte. OpenWeb CEO Keoma Wright says its entry-level capped product offers full ADSL line speed and is unshaped. “[It is also] contract-free and we offer instant activation.” The monthly cost will depend on the package ordered from OpenWeb, ranging from 1GB to 20GB unshaped ADSL packages. – ITWeb
