AS 2010 draws to a close, I'm sure many of us will reflect on what a long, hard and often frustrating year is has been. While I cannot put my finger on it, 2010 just wasn't what it promised to be, perhaps because we - somehow subconsciously - expected more from what was always going to be a milestone year.

IN LINE WITH South Africa's usual tendency to announce grandiose national plans, then delay them indefinitely, our digital broadcasting roll-out has fallen behind schedule. No surprises there.

A WISE OLD MAN ONCE SAID: "If you're born an idiot, you will die an idiot."

Actually, I'm not sure if he was all that wise, but he was certainly elderly. In fact, he was some guy who stood behind me in a queue at the post office, a few years back. Post office queues always seem to be extremely long, even if there are only two people in front of you.

QUIRK EMARKETING'S Justin Spratt likes to refer to a quote by personal computing pioneer Mitchell Kapor, which says: "Searching for information on the Internet is like taking a drink from a fire hydrant."

FINALLY, Telkom has taken that much-anticipated plunge into the mobile sector - a move mostly welcomed by industry and analysts alike.
